Lion's Mane Mushroom: What It Actually Does for a Busy Mom's Brain

I remember after becoming a mom feeling like my brain just didn't work the same way anymore.

Not worse. Just overloaded.

Like there were constantly 37 things running in the background at all times. Appointments, school events, meals, work, the mental list that never actually gets shorter.

I kept looking for something that would help me feel a little more clear. A little more like myself.

That's what led me down a rabbit hole on Lion's Mane mushroom.

Not because it was trending. Because I genuinely noticed a difference when I was consistent with it. Less scattered. More able to actually finish a thought. Less like I was constantly trying to catch up to my own life.

So I want to talk about what Lion's Mane actually is, what the research says, and why I included it in BrainStack.

What Is Lion's Mane?

Lion's Mane is a functional mushroom that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, particularly in Asia, for brain and nervous system support.

It's not a stimulant. It doesn't give you a jolt of energy like caffeine. What it does is quieter than that and, for a lot of women, more useful.

The active compounds in Lion's Mane, called hericenones and erinacines, are thought to support something called nerve growth factor, or NGF. NGF is basically a signal your brain uses to maintain and support the health of its neurons. Think of it as one of the things that keeps your brain cells communicating well with each other. That's why Lion's Mane is primarily researched for focus, mental clarity, mood, and cognitive support rather than energy or stimulation.

What the Research Actually Says

I want to be honest here. The human research on Lion's Mane is promising but still early. These are small studies, not massive clinical trials. So I am not going to overclaim.

Here is what the research actually shows.

Focus and mental speed. A 2023 placebo-controlled study in healthy adults found that Lion's Mane improved processing speed on cognitive tests about one hour after a single dose. The same study found a trend toward reduced subjective stress over 28 days.[1]

Mood support. Another study in healthy adults reported better reaction time and improved mood ratings after consistent Lion's Mane supplementation.[2]

Cognitive support over time. A double-blind trial found that cognitive scores improved over 16 weeks of Lion's Mane supplementation, with benefits fading after stopping.[3]

Especially relevant for women under hormonal stress. A study in menopausal women using Lion's Mane for 4 weeks reported reduced anxiety and depression symptoms compared with placebo.[4]

None of this means Lion's Mane fixes everything. But for a mom who is mentally overloaded, dealing with hormonal fluctuations, and running on not enough sleep, the research points in an interesting direction.

The BDNF Connection

Here is where it gets really interesting.

Lion's Mane is also being studied for its potential effect on BDNF, which stands for brain-derived neurotrophic factor.

BDNF is sometimes called the brain's growth and maintenance signal. It helps support the survival of neurons, strengthens the connections between them, and plays a key role in learning, memory, and how well your brain adapts under stress.[5]

A simple way to think about it: BDNF helps your brain stay resilient. And chronic stress, poor sleep, and hormonal shifts, which are basically the daily reality of most moms in their 30s and 40s, can all affect how well that system functions.

Lion's Mane is thought to support NGF and BDNF pathways, which is part of why it's being studied for cognitive resilience, not just short-term focus.[6]

What This Means for Moms Specifically

The best way I can describe what Lion's Mane does is this.

Lion's mane is not a stimulant and does not add caffeine to a formula. Individual responses vary, and it is often discussed as one ingredient people consider for daily cognitive support.

The scatter, the half-finished thoughts, the feeling of being mentally stretched thin by 2pm. That's not a character flaw. That's what happens when your brain is running too many tabs for too long without enough support. Lion's Mane is one ingredient that may help with focus, mental clarity, and stress resilience during those kinds of days.*

Why I Put It in BrainStack

I didn't include Lion's Mane in BrainStack because it was trendy. I included it because I kept coming back to it personally. It was one of those ingredients where I noticed a real difference when I was consistent with it and noticed when I wasn't.

BrainStack is a daily dietary supplement with 8 listed ingredients in its recommended 3-capsule serving, formulated with women's cognitive and everyday demands in mind. Lion's Mane is one of the main ingredients for a reason.
